Inspirational novel about a Hawaiian leprosy colony. Father Damien was a Belgium priest who volunteered in the leprosy colony in 1873, and quickly decided this was his life's work, and asked if he could stay here to help the people. This story was built upon actual letters that went between family members and the inhabitants of the island. Very moving story...how outcasts thrown aside, left to battle to survive in a lawless community, bodies failing, still have the strength to turn towards God.
